Most of the telephone cables had been destroyed in the barrages, and the most reliable method of keeping in touch was by runner or horseman: this meant that artillery fire was haphazard and speculative.

On 12 March, the Germans counter-attacked after a heavy artillery barrage. Although a thick mist enabled their infantry to come closer to the British trenches before being spotted, they were then checked and sustained heavy losses. An attempt was made to mount further British attacks but, as there were no fresh troops for the purpose and ammunition was now very short, the battle drifted to an end. Neuve Chapelle had been captured, and two thousand prisoners had been taken, but the British force had sustained eleven thousand casualties. The German losses were probably as high.* The British had won a victory, but it was far from decisive — if they could only have gone a little further and faster they could probably have secured the coveted ridge and then made a deep hole in the German line.
